a few gray hairs

Peeking through the thick of his brunette-do
silver strands found their way
between combed side locks
accenting his once young features
with the shade of seasoned experience
reflecting the length of the many moons he has seen
chase the sun around the stars constellations
designed by an entity he is incapable of fully understanding
through a mind molded by an ever changing environment
in which he is only a temporary member
contributing to its movement.

  1. My dear distinguished fellow, it is with great pleasure that I announce to you that I can , in fact, relate to this very ode. It behoves one to say that it really is rather enjoyable to finally be recognised upon first appearances as one of the experienced and wiser members of society. PLease accept my congratulations

  2. Glenn, Thank you! I appreciate it! Mine are still rather camouflaged in my light brown hair, but nevertheless I feel they reflect my ever changing identity…and reminded me I am only temporary.

  3. Like Glenn, I can relate to this one.

This is nice: “accenting his once young features with the shade of seasoned experience”

    Nicely done Travis!

  4. Don, I’m glad you were able to relate to this. I’ve recently gotten a few short hardly noticable silver strands, but they were enough to inspire me to write this!

  5. Well, in my little corner of the world only the gray is temporary. It goes like…”I’m gonna wash that gray right out’a my hair…” You men are lucky to have gray add up to character and wisdom. For women, gray adds up to just plain old! I figure if I try really hard I can be just as wise with brown hair! Im’a gonna try it! :)

  6. Shirley, thanks for making me laugh! :D

  7. You are most welcome!

  8. Ron

I deal with this wonderful phenomena on a daily basis, not only in my own 60 something locks but in my business as a salon owner as well. I happen to make a somewhat reasonable living (well, not living really, maybe just a little money, the living thing is something else).
Hey, is that the Shirley who has an appointment with me tomorrow?

  9. Wow, that is awesome Ron!

I have a couple questions for you, you being a salon owner and all, what have you learned from your experience with people and their hair about their personalities and characters in relation to their hair?

In other words, are you able to determine and detect a general personality or character trait with a person by their hair style?

What have you learned about people in relation to their hair overall through the salon?

Wow, none of that came out right, but hopefully you know what I am trying to ask. :)

  10. Travis, what does Dolly Parton’s hairdo say about her? What? You’ve never noticed her hair?

And Ron, whatever happened to “Only your hairdresser knows for sure.? btw I can’t make it today.

  11. Shirley, I was just wondering if Ron has found any correlation between peoples behavior patterns / character and their doo.

What about Shirly Temples curly hair, she was certainly a colorful character.

Most definately. Hair and personality/character are strongly correlated, but usually shows up in the more self-assured people who don’t worry about how others perceive them. The rest tend to want what everyone else is doing even if it’s not really ‘them’. This is sad, of course, in that it limits our creativity.
I did this cute, short, spiky cut on an almost 50 but spunky lady and noticed a mid 70′s lady watching intently. She would later say something typically cliched like….’Oh, that’s so cute on her but I could never wear something like that’ and I want to say ‘why not?’. This is an example of our culturally induced unconsciousness.
I could go on with many examples but perhaps this is not the best venue. Maybe I should tell some of these stories on my own blog. Anyway, Shirley, sorry you can’t make it. And if I do my job right, I should be the only one that knows for sure.

  13. Ron! That would be awesome if you had these kinds of stories on your blog. I, for one would be a regular reader to such rich insightful content. Thank you for sharing this example.
