Ordinary Things

There are no ugly things,
nor beautiful things.
Only ordinary things.
Things in which light and shadows highlight,
and perspectives distort.

The line ” and perspectives distort” really ties in well with the “big and small, close and far” part of Zen philosophy. I guess there is still debate as to whether there actually are things. We at least know that no thing is eternal…

Glen, An interesting post I once read on another blog, I can’t remember which one now, offered the idea that perhaps “things” or rather “substance” is the solid form of “emptiness”
…that kind of stuck to me. I’m still pondering on it.
Hi Travis- thus proving zen isn’t everything! Well actually you are correct and I am only partly right.. i was thinking of Chuang Tzu who said..
“There is nothing greater in the world than the tip of hair that grows in the Autumn; while Mount T’ai is small”
He is considered a leading Taoist I guess, but his impact on Buddhism has been tremendous, particularly the zen school.
I hope that clarifies the intent of my comment.
Cheers
Glenn
Hi Glenn, thanks for clarifying your intentions.
You lead me to this thought… “How can we live in this world without using our mind?” the reason I ask is because by using our mind to perceive the world, everything will be relative to it, and how accurate is that?
